Present‐Day Volcanism on Venus: Evidence from Microwave Radiometry
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] We present new evidence for volcanic eruptions and lava flow emplacement on Venus within the last several decades. An integrated study of a radar‐dark lava flow unit in Bereghinia Planitia on Venus (∼28°E, ∼39°N) based on Magellan data obtained in 1993 reveals a significant apparent microwave thermal emission excess, consistent with increased subsurface temperature due to very recent lava flow emplacement. The flow unit occupies the stratigraphically youngest position in the area and in part is more than 15 years old because it was also observed in the radar map obtained by Pioneer‐ Venus in 1978. Analysis of lava flow cooling rates and geological characteristics point to flow material of mafic composition. Future missions can employ this microwave radiometry technique to search for and monitor active volcanism on Venus. Citation: Bondarenko, N. V., J. W. Volcanism and its role in Climate on Venus
There has clearly been significant volcanic activity on the surface of Venus in recent geological epochs and there is a great deal of indirect evidence that this may continue at the present time. However, the current level of activity is unknown and remains controversial, with estimates for the rate of emission of volcanic gases into the atmosphere ranging from essentially quiescent to very hig...
متن کاملVolcanism and Tectonics on Venus
We review recent developments in the study of volcanism and tectonics on Venus. Venus’s crust is basaltic, dry, and probably about 30 km thick. The mantle convects, giving rise to plumes, and has a similar composition and mean temperature (∼1300◦C), but a higher viscosity (∼1020 Pa s), than that of the Earth. Inferred melt generation rates constrain the lithospheric thickness to between 80 and ...
متن کاملThe surface of Venus
Venus is a planet that is similar to Earth in terms of some important planetary parameters (size, mass, position in the solar system, presence of atmosphere) and different in terms of other, equally important ones (absence of an intrinsic magnetic field, large atmospheric mass, carbon dioxide composition of the atmosphere, lack of water, very high surface pressure and temperature). The surface ...
متن کاملMechanisms for Lithospheric Heat Transport on Venus: Implications for Tectonic Style and Volcanism
The tectonic and volcanic characteristics of the surface of Venus are poorly known, but these characteristics must be closely related to the mechanism by which Venus rids itself of internal heat. On the other solid planets and satellites of the solar system, lithospheric heat [ransport is dominated by one of three mechanisms: (1) plate recycling, (2) lithospheric conduction, and (3) hot spot vo...
متن کاملOn rates and styles of late volcanism and rifting on Venus
[1] We investigated the possibility of significant variations in the rates and styles of volcanism and rifting during the time postdating the formation of regional plains on Venus. We analyzed the age relations of all known impact craters 30 km in diameter (183 craters) with the neighboring geologic units. Of these we selected 164 craters which were superposed on regional plains and determined ...
